I will tell you the latest before I tell you about our day with Caroline:
Mom and I just got back to the hotel, today has been a day that no one should have to go through with any member of their family. It has been heart breaking, decisions were made and now we are just waiting for God to call Caroline home.
She is now in a coma with no response and will not wake again before she crosses over. The nurse checked her eyes with a very bright light and they were totally unresponsive.
Her breathing had become more labored, yet shallow so I called the nurse in to check her. He said right now her body is filling up with acidic poisons and that is why her breathing is so hard.
The chest muscles are helping her breathe. He gave her another injection to calm down those muscles so she would be more comfortable.
This morning she still had a feeding tube, back brace, neck collar and feeding tube. She had not really felt any pain. She woke up and was trying to talk to us. Jim (her husband) was encouraged by any sign that he thought showed she was improving. He could not make the decision about what really needed to be done.
I went to the room once when no one else was in there and talked to Caroline. She was hearing and answering by shaking her head yes or no. I told her it was me and she took my hand. I ask her if she wanted to know what all was really going on, because she had told Jim earlier not to lie to her about anything. She shook her head yes. She does not remember the accident at all.
I ask her if she knew her back was broken. She shook her head yes. I ask if she knew she would be paralyzed for the rest of her life. She shook her head NO. I told her Jim wanted to put her on dialysis - she again shook her head NO. I told her they wanted to put her on life support and also that she would be fed with a feeding tube the rest of her life. She became agitated.
I said, Caroline calm down. Do you want this? She shook NO. I ask if she wanted to go on to Heaven and she shook YES. I told her I would go get the family and a nurse and they would take the breathing mask off and we could talk - she shook YES. So that is what we did, we got Jim, Anna, JC (Jimmie), Dad, Mom, myself and a nurse in the room.
The nurse took the mask off and we again went through the questions, and she at first kept saying to Jim - do whatever you want. He couldn't say anything. So I again went over all the questions I had ask her earlier and she answered the same way - but by talking this time. Then she said she wanted to go to Heaven. She did not want to live like that the rest of her life. The nurse looked at me and I just shook my head yes, that was the answer she needed.
The rest of the day until about 5 Caroline talked to everyone that came into the room. LOTS of friends from church came. At times there were about 10 people in her little room. She joked, cried, talked shared love for everyone, thanked people for things and we all shared.
Then she could not rest - sleep would not come. The nurse said she had too much anxiety and ask her if she wanted a shot to help relax her and she had stated feeling the pain of her broken arm so she said she would give her pain meds for that. That all started leading to where we are now.
One other thing was she told her daughter to go home, as Anna starts a new job on Monday and if she misses any of the training she loses the job. No exceptions. So through many tears Anna agreed to go even though she did not want too. Caroline told her she loved her and would see her again in Heaven. She also told her she needed to take care of herself so that she didn't end up like she was. Anna said she would do all she could to do that.
So for tonight that is it. I need to get some sleep because we will be heading up there early tomorrow, unless we get a call tonight.
Please pray for our families. This has been so hard on everyone. Thank you. I will let you know what happens later.
